What we do

Service of process, done by the people who already run your filings.

Most firms keep two vendors: one to serve, one to file. It creates a gap. The server completes the service, the proof of service then has to get to the courthouse, and the two halves sit with different companies on different schedules. Power House Courier does both, so the service and the filing that follows it are one job with one chain of custody.

We are a registered California process server. That matters more than it sounds: under California law almost anyone can serve a summons once, but doing it as a business requires registration, and an unregistered server is an invitation for opposing counsel to attack the service rather than the merits.

Summons and complaint, personal and substituted service
Deposition and records subpoenas
Restraining orders and ex parte papers
Unlawful detainer and eviction notices
Small claims, writs, levies and citations
Proof of service prepared and returned ready to file
Declaration of due diligence when a party cannot be served
Filing the proof of service on the same run
⚖ Scenario

"Defendant has dodged two prior attempts and your proof of service has to be on file before the hearing. We attempt at different times of day, log every attempt with date, time and observation, and when service completes the proof of service comes back signed. If it does not, you get a declaration of due diligence you can actually use to move for substituted service."

Know the rule

Who may serve process
in California and Arizona.

01

Any non-party over 18

California Code of Civil Procedure section 414.10: a summons may be served by any person at least 18 years of age who is not a party to the action. Federal practice reads the same way under FRCP 4(c)(2).

02

But volume triggers registration

Business and Professions Code section 22350: more than 10 services of process in a calendar year for compensation means you must register. Corporations and partnerships deriving compensation from process service must register regardless of volume.

03

Arizona is stricter: certification required

Arizona has no general adult-server route for a business. To act as a private process server in Arizona you must be certified, through the Clerk of the Superior Court in your county of residency, and follow Arizona Code of Judicial Administration 7-204. The Arizona Supreme Court publishes a public directory of certified servers.

04

Ask any server for the number

In California a registered server files a verified certificate with the county clerk. In Arizona a certified server appears in the Supreme Court directory. Either way the server can give you the number and county on request. If a company cannot, book someone who can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions
about service of process.

Yes. Power House Courier is a registered California process server. California Business and Professions Code section 22350 requires registration for anyone making more than 10 services of process in a calendar year for compensation, and for any corporation or partnership deriving compensation from process service regardless of volume. Ask us for the number and county any time.
Yes. We handle service of process in Arizona as well as California, including the Phoenix metro and Maricopa County. Arizona works differently from California. There is no route for an ordinary adult to serve on behalf of a business: a private process server in Arizona must be certified, through the Clerk of the Superior Court in their county of residency, and must follow Arizona Code of Judicial Administration 7-204. The Arizona Supreme Court publishes a public directory of certified servers, so you can and should verify any Arizona server you hire. See process server Phoenix for the Arizona detail.
A legal courier delivers and files documents and brings back the clerk-stamped conformed copy. A process server delivers legal papers to a person in a way the law recognises as service, and prepares a proof of service. They are different jobs with different rules. Power House Courier does both, which is why the service and the filing that follows it can run as one job instead of two vendors.
No. Under California Code of Civil Procedure section 414.10 a summons may be served by any person at least 18 years of age who is not a party to the action. A party to the case cannot serve their own papers. A friend or relative over 18 may serve once, but anyone serving more than 10 times a year for compensation must register.
We attempt at different times of day and log each attempt with date, time, address and what the server observed. If personal service cannot be completed, that log becomes a declaration of due diligence, which is what the court wants to see before it will allow substituted service or service by publication. Tell us at booking if you already know the party is evading, and we will plan the attempts around it.
Yes. The proof of service is prepared and returned signed, ready to go into your filing. If you want it filed as well, we can file it at the courthouse on the same job and return the conformed copy, so service and filing are not split across two companies.
Summons and complaints, deposition and records subpoenas, restraining orders and ex parte papers, unlawful detainer and eviction notices, small claims papers, writs, levies and judgment debtor examinations. If you have something unusual, call dispatch and describe it rather than guessing.
It depends on the service address, the deadline and how many attempts the matter is likely to need. Dispatch is staffed 24/7 by a real person, so call with the court, the deadline and the address and you will get a straight answer on timing rather than a callback.
Yes. Law firms email info@phcouriers.com to set up a B2B account with priority dispatch, matter-coded billing and a single consolidated monthly invoice covering both service of process and court filing work.
